Normally you hear more complaints that the water pressure is too low in a home. This is generally the case throughout older homes that may have galvanized water lines coming in off the street. Newer homes however have a completely different type of problem to consider.
The water mains that supply the newer homes throughout most of Kansas City are under much more pressure than older neighborhoods. Our plumbers have tested water pressure in Overland Park that is 110 psi, while most older neighborhoods keep it around 50 psi.
When the water supplied from the city is over 80 psi, plumbing code required a Pressure Reducing Valve to be installed. A PRV or Pressure Reducing Valve is designed to reduce your water pressure to safe levels. It is common for the PRV to fail, which will all your water pressure to reach dangerous levels.
It’s usually your water heater that is the first part of your plumbing system to be damaged from the high water pressure. It usually causes the tank to leak which means the water heater has to be replaced.
That’s why we check the water pressure at the home for every water heater we install and make recommendations based on our findings.
