A T&P Valve is a safety feature that is required on all traditional water heaters. Commonly referred to the temperature and pressure relief valve, this part of the water heater can fail and may need to be replaced if a leak develops.
This valve is actually designed to start leaking if pressure inside of the water heater exceeds 165 psi. When water is heated the molecules expand which is referred to as thermal expansion. If the thermal expansion is excessive and has nowhere to go the water heater could explode. A T&P valve is designed to let out pressure once it has become too high.
If you have a T&P Valve that has started to leak it may be a good indication that you need to install a thermal expansion tank. If there is too much thermal expansion your T&P valve will continue to trip over and over until an expansion tank is added.
