A backflow preventer is required in some homes and businesses in order to protect the potable water supply. This is a picture of an RPZ backflow preventer that is sized for a 3/4″ inch supply line which would usually be used in residential applications. The idea behind a backflow preventer is to prevent possible contamination of the potable water supply. Backflow is not typically a concern unless the water supply is shut off.
A backflow preventer should be installed to protect cross contamination from within your home. By shutting off the water supply there is a real concern for cross contamination. A water powered backup sump pump should have an RPZ Backflow preventer to protect potable water supply from within the home.
Homes with boilers will also commonly have to have an RPZ backflow preventer to keep from contaminating outside the main city supply.
Backflow preventers need to be tested once per year to meet most city requirements. Special licensing is required for backflow testing. KC Plumber Pro does not currently offer backflow testing services.
